Tottenham Hotspur’s Dane Scarlett could be more effective as a winger than a centre-forward according to Portsmouth boss John Mousinho with the Premier League starlet impressing out on loan.
If Scarlett is looking for inspiration, Mousinho believes that the teenager should look no further than a man who could conceivably claim to be Europe’s most in-form forward in 2023.
Marcus Rashford made his name as a number nine in his early days at Old Trafford. This season, however, he has plundered more goals than ever before; cutting in to devastating effect from the left-hand side under Erik ten Hag.

And Mousinho, using Scarlett out wide rather than through the middle since arriving as Danny Cowley’s replacement, believes the Spurs loanee can make a similar impact in a new role.
Tottenham’s Dane Scarlett impressing in a new position at Portsmouth
“Dane definitely has a future playing off one of the wings,” Mousinho tells The News. “When he has played in our side, it has been off the left and he’s affected games.
“Certainly, if he wants to play for Spurs in the next year or so then it might be time to think about. Something other than playing as a number nine.

“One which springs to mind is Marcus Rashford; a centre-forward coming through the ranks and has now reinvented himself as that wide player cutting in. And still with the ability to score.”
A prolific goalscorer at youth level, Scarlett has found the net only six times in 37 games for Pompey. Some rather underwhelming numbers, however, must be taken in context; Mousinho hailing Scarlett’s development in an all-new position.
“I know he wants to play as that number nine,” Mousinho adds. “But that flexibility fitting into different formations and different sides is going to be really important for him.’
“He is genuinely both footed. He really is.
“It’s his first loan and he’s developing pretty well. What Dane has produced this season to affect League One games has been brilliant.”
