Greta Gerwig was already an acclaimed actor but she immediately proved herself as a talent behind the camera with her directorial feature debut Lady Bird in 2017 and cemented her status as one of the most exciting emerging filmmakers with her sophomore effort Little Women set in Boston, Massachusetts.
Nobody could have expected her to approach a live-action Barbie movie for her third film but it was a promising announcement all the same, especially when Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were locked in.
With the release of the first trailer, some are learning and others are being reminded that Amy Schumer was originally part of the cast.
Of course, the first question falls on who Amy Schumer was playing in the Barbie cast. Secondly, you’ll be curious about why she left. So, let’s address both points…
Why did Amy Schumer leave Barbie role?
The 41-year-old stand-up comedian was originally set to play the central Barbie character that ultimately went to Margot Robbie.
Amy explained during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she departed from the project due to creative differences. She says she wanted Barbie to be an inventor with high ambitions, whereas the studio then tried to compromise by asking if the doll’s invention could be a Jell-O high heel shoe.
“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” she announced.
Additionally, she was sent a pair of Manolo Blahniks shoes to celebrate the casting and argued during the interview that “the idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”
Although Amy has addressed creative differences, she originally cited that she abandoned the film “due to scheduling conflicts” in a statement and added that she was “bummed” but looking forward to seeing the film.
Although there’s no Amy, the likes of Will Ferrell and more are confirmed to star.
