It’s not often that animals feature prominently at the Oscars, but this ceremony sees the donkey celebrated in two nominated films.
Hollywood is readying itself for the biggest night of the year as the 95th Academy Awards swiftly approach. This year, the ceremony takes place on Sunday, March 12. It will be held at the Dolby Theatre, the home of the Oscars since 2001, and hosted by late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.
An unusual coincidence this year is that two films featuring donkeys are up for awards. Let’s take a look at how the humble donkey is dominating at Hollywood’s most exclusive event.

Which films feature a donkey at the Oscars?
There are two films which feature donkeys as part of their cast: The Banshees Of Inisherin and EO.
Jenny the Donkey is a prominent character in The Banshees Of Inisherin, Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy about the break-up of a lifelong friendship between two friends living off the coast of Ireland. Jenny is the best friend of our lead, Pádraic (Colin Farrell), and accompanies him throughout the film. Farrell has received a nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Pádraic.
EO, directed by Polish veteran director Jerzy Skolimowski, is also up for Best International Feature. This moving drama follows the life of the titular donkey, who encounters both good (but mainly bad) on his journey through life.
Jenny the Donkey makes up ‘dream Oscar nominee’ lineup
Ahead of the Oscar nominations being announced, movie lovers took to the internet to share their thoughts on the best performances over the past year. What may have come as a surprise for those who didn’t see EO or The Banshees Of Inisherin, was the presences of animals on some ‘dream’ nominee shortlists.
One Twitter user joked that Jenny the Donkey should receive an award for Best Animal Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.
But others couldn’t bear anymore heart-wrenching donkey scenes. “There better not be any donkeys in AFTERSUN,” one Twitter user joked. “That’s up next and after EO and BANSHEES today, I can’t take any more.”
How to watch the Oscar-nominated donkey films
