Liverpool have been criticised by Jamie Carragher for the signing of Cody Gakpo – after the Reds ended their pursuit of Jude Bellingham.
What’s the story?
Well, Gakpo arrived at Anfield in a £40m switch from PSV Eindhoven back in January, a move Carragher has now described as a “baffling” decision by Liverpool.
The 45-year-old believes the money spent on signing the Dutchman should have been added to the Bellingham fund, as he feels Jürgen Klopp didn’t really need another forward when sealing a deal for the Netherlands international.
Carragher wrote in the Telegraph: “Then Cody Gakpo signed for £40m in January, even though the side was crying out for more midfield energy. Gakpo has made a promising start. I like him, but now it is even more baffling that another striker was prioritised. Most supporters would have willingly accepted the Gakpo outlay being kept back to turn a £90m Bellingham bid into a £130m signing.
“This is the first time I have openly questioned Liverpool’s transfer policy during the Klopp era.”

Carragher certainly hasn’t minced his words here.
Gakpo has scored four goals in 12 Premier League appearances since his move to Liverpool.

As Carragher states, the 23-year-old has made a bright start, although it really didn’t feel like a necessary signing for Liverpool to make, seeing as they already have Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez tied down.
Liverpool shoot themselves in the foot with Gakpo
If money wasn’t an issue, and Liverpool operated how Manchester City and Chelsea do, then a £40m deal for Gakpo wouldn’t be under much scrutiny – Carragher himself even called the Dutchman a “revelation”on Sky Sports last month.
However, it doesn’t seem like it was a deal worth doing if funds are now tight when it comes to signing a game-changing central midfielder such as Bellingham.
Of course, that isn’t intended as a criticism of Gakpo, who looks capable of being a suitable long-term replacement for the departing Roberto Firmino.
It is more a matter of timing – Carragher is right to question the logic behind that £40m January signing.
