HITC gets the role that Bexhill plays in the narrative of the Children Of Men movie explained.
We have no shortage of visionary and acclaimed filmmakers and it’s always interesting to look back on the careers of certain directors to assess the trajectory of their careers.
In the case of Alfonso Cuarón, his filmography is both varied and exceptional, having gifted audiences with the likes of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Gravity, Roma, and of course, Children Of Men, which stars Clive Owen in the central role. It’s available in the UK on Amazon Prime Video as part of a Lionsgate+ subscription.
Based on P. D. James’ 1992 novel, the 2006 dystopian drama is set in 2027 and envisions a world that has been dealing with infertility for the past two decades. Clive co-stars with big names from Julianne Moore to Michael Caine.
Since its release, the film has developed a cult following, with some arguing that it’s a prophetic and cautionary piece of work.
Indeed, some have recently referenced the film in the wake of current events regarding accommodation centres in Bexhill. As tweets continue to emerge in reaction, what role does Bexhill play in Children Of Men?

Bexhill in Children Of Men explained
In the year 2027, Children Of Men’s narrative presents us with the United Kingdom as one of the remaining nations that have a government still in place. As global governments have fallen, many have been forced to flee their homes and travel to the UK to seek asylum.
However, due to the huge increase in illegal immigrants arriving in the UK, the country has become a police state and immigrants are captured and imprisoned in camps. Some are even killed.
The seaside town of Bexhill-on-Sea has become the site of a huge refugee camp and the conditions ultimately facilitate a war between the military and the refugees imprisoned there.
As the conflicts and violent resistance escalate, British fighter jets are dispatched to Bexhill, and airstrikes are conducted, descending the area into further chaos and making rubble of the camps.
What are the plans for Bexhill?
The Daily Mail reported in late March that there are plans to house close to 5,000 asylum seekers in accommodation centers in Britain.
More specifically, Robert Jenrick – the immigration minister – announced that 1,200 Channel migrants will be placed in a new center at Bexhill.
Beyond the site at Bexhill, others will be made up at former military bases at Wethersfield, Essex, and Scampton, Lincolnshire. The decision has proven divisive amongst the British public.
Children Of Men fans react
Following the announcement of the new center at Bexhill, some have taken to Twitter to draw parallels between the events and locations of Children Of Men and present-day politics.
