The release date for Attack on Titan season 4 part 3 has now been confirmed with the anime series’ final broadcast split into two more parts.
For almost an entire decade, Attack on Titan has been a staple of the manga world, anime industry, and internet culture; however, with the iconic anime series preparing to broadcast its final chapter, fans around the world are desperate to find out more about how and when Shingeki no Kyojin will conclude.
On the one hand, fans are frustrated by the news that MAPPA have split the final season of Attack on Titan into two more parts.
Thankfully, the release date and broadcast format for Attack on Titan season 4 part 3 (part 1) have finally been confirmed – here is everything that fans need to know.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 release date confirmed
Attack on Titan season 4 part 3 is scheduled to release on Saturday, March 4; first for domestic audiences in Japan.
Fans should note that the anime will premiere at 12:25 AM JST on the NHK TV network in Japan on March 4. This means that Attack on Titan will be dropping its new episode on Friday, March 3 for the majority of international viewers.
Crunchyroll is expected to simulcast Attack on Titan season 4 part 3, but strangely the platform has neither confirmed this publicly just yet nor provided details on what time the special episode will be available to stream online.
The new opening theme song is titled ‘Under the Tree’, is co-performed by Man With A Mission and Milet, and is actually dedicated to Mikasa.
“To be honest, I was a little worried about what kind of response it would get before its release, but I feel that the fact that I was entrusted with the ending of an important episode that marks the final phase of this story is the answer to that question. This time, “Under the Tree” is Mikasa’s song.” – SiM
In April 2022, only a few hours before the part 2 finale aired in Japan, it was revealed that Attack on Titan would return for season 4 part 3 in 2023. However, the hit anime adaptation’s concluding broadcast will actually be split into two parts – the final part will be released later in 2023, and a more specific release date remains TBA.
“We are pleased to announce that the TV animation “Shinkoku no Kyojin” The Final Season will be broadcast in two parts, the first part and the second part. The first part will be broadcast on NHK General at midnight on March 3, and the second part will be broadcast in 2023.” – Shingeki no Kyojin The Final Season Production Committee

MAPPA would also share a message on Twitter concerning why the final broadcast will again be split into two parts. As translated by the AOT Wiki page, “The amount of work expanded significantly than expected, and after consultation with the production committee we will release it in two parts: part 1 & part 2.”
“We sincerely apologize to everyone for making you wait for a while before the completion of the film. The production committee and everyone involved will continue to do our utmost to deliver a work that lives up to everyone’s expectations. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.” – Shingeki no Kyojin The Final Season Production Committee
Interestingly, fans were already expecting season 4 part 3 to be notably shorter than previous Attack on Titan broadcasts, but why?
Attack on Titan season 4 part 3 to be a shorter run
Whilst the global Attack on Titan community is now counting down the hours until the series returns, many are aware that season 4 part 3 will be notably shorter than either part 1 or 2; as evidenced by the fact that part 3 will start with just a single hour-long episode.
This is because there aren’t enough manga chapters to make a completely strict adaptation for another 12-episode run, let alone a two-cour final broadcast. Over the course of season 4, MAPPA has made a habit of adapting between one and two chapters from the original manga.
Part one, with a total of 16 episodes, adapted from chapter 91 “The Other Side of the Ocean” to chapter 116 “Above and Below.” Part two, with 12 episodes, adapted chapter 117 “Judgement” to chapter 130 “The Dawn of Humanity.”
However, there are only nine chapters from the manga series left to be covered in the TV series, meaning that there was notably less source material available to MAPPA to make a full 12-episode season.
- Chapter 131: The Rumbling
- Chapter 132: The Wings of Freedom
- Chapter 133: Sinners
- Chapter 134: In the Depths of Despair
- Chapter 135: The Battle of Heaven and Earth
- Chapter 136: Dedicate Your Heart
- Chapter 137: Titans
- Chapter 138: A Long Dream
- Chapter 139: Toward the Tree on That Hill
Whilst there is a chance that MAPPA could add in some filler content and stretch out certain sequences in order to extend the series, the studio has been extremely strict with their adaptation of Isayama’s original manga. A more realistic expectation is that Attack on Titan season 4 part 3’s second part later in 2023 will also be a one-to-two hour-long special episode.
