Arsenal are reportedly considering a move to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia this summer, a player that Paul Scholes says has “so much potential” and could not understand why Manchester City allowed the teen to leave.
Lavia, 19, joined Southampton last summer for a fee of £14million. He has since played 20 times in all competitions for the Saints, impressing the biggest clubs in the Premier League. Chelsea and Manchester United are also interested.
The Mail claim Arsenal are now also looking at the Belgium U21 star, who only managed two senior games for Man City. It is unclear how much Lavia would cost. City do have a buyback clause, while his Saints contract is until 2027.
Speaking earlier this season, Scholes was impressed by Lavia. As per The Mail, Scholes told BT Sport that he was surprised that Manchester City let him leave. He outlined all of the plus points about Lavia – and his huge potential.

“I was surprised when City let him go I think he is good enough potentially, he is only 18-years-old maybe hold him back a bit. He is a player with so much potential and he could potentially go back, but he has settled in so well.

“He has got a pass in his locker and he is big and strong and likes to defend. He does not want to get forward too much and sits in-front of the back four and sets the play in motion from there,” Scholes said earlier this season.
Arsenal considering Lavia, Scholes says he has so much potential
The Gunners have a number of midfielders available to them. Thomas Partey is first choice, in Lavia’s role, while Jorginho has been brought to the club as cover. Such a move saw Albert Sambi Lokonga go on loan to Crystal Palace.
In front of the holding midfielder, Arsenal have Granit Xhaka, Martin Odegaard, Fabio Vieira and plenty more. But Lavia is best in front of the defence in the Partey role. Arsenal are well-stocked there, with Partey, Jorginho and Lokonga.
So, do they actually need him – now Jorginho has come on board? It might be that Mikel Arteta wants a young player that can come in and eventually, overtake Partey and Jorginho. But, Lavia has tasted first-team football, now.
