American Girl dolls Nicki and Isabel were brought to life by real twin authors

American Girl’s twin dolls, Isabel and Nicki Hoffman, are here to inspire millennials with their story set in 1999. The historical duo celebrates girl power and shows how to be true to yourself.

The brand that’s inspired viral TikTok trends with its collections has now collaborated with real-life author twins Julia DeVillers and Jennifer Roy, who have injected life into the characters using their own experiences.

The girls are defined by different sets of characteristics despite being twins, which makes the duo appeal to a wider demographic.

The launch of the new dolls comes two months after the backlash the manufacturer received for reportedly pushing puberty blockers in a book.

Meet American Girl twin dolls Nicki and Isabel

Nicki and Isabel are American Girl’s first-ever twin characters and they are shown as kids in the 1990s, growing up in Seattle, Washington.

Isabel is an extrovert, who enjoys pop music and planning parties. Meanwhile, her twin Nicki is comparatively shy and prefers to express herself with homemade magazines.

The dolls thrive in their unique ways but stand by each other and celebrate life together. The story also navigates the major transition from the ’90s to 2000, with the girls’ “10 Things to Do Before Y2K”.

The press release notes, the twins celebrate their girl power in numerous ways – including their 2-in-1 tennis court, skate pot, computer desk, and Pizza Hut book it set.

They can be styled using dresses inspired by the ’90s style.

The 18-inch dolls and the rest of their collection are available to buy on American Doll’s official website.

Why the hysterical duo from the ’90s matters

The twin dolls are sure to make you feel nostalgic, but they were intended to send out messages that strike the right chord with the millennials and establish a strong sense of girl power.

The overall concept thrives on the idea of girls voicing their opinions and standing up for what they believe in. With twin dolls displaying opposite characters, it encourages each individual to be true to themselves regardless of what their choices are.

The American Doll collection propels girls to “face your fears”, no matter how big or menial a task is.

Even the girls’ favorite animals contradict the popular opinion about dog and cat people co-existing.

Real-life twins have created the journals

Julia wrote Isabel’s journal, while Jennifer created Nicki’s.

Isabel’s cat, Buffy, was inspired by a cat the real-life twins had when they were the doll’s age. And, Jennifer rode a skateboard in her neighborhood and performed some tricks in Upstate New York, which you can see in Nicki.

They have incorporated their own spooky stories into the lives of the twins as they go back to their childhood in the girls’ journals.

When asked about the takeaway from Nicki and SIabel’s journals, Jennifer said: “I hope Nicki’s story makes people who may be struggling to find friends feel less alone. I also would love readers to challenge themselves to face their fears and find their own voices.”

Julia added: “I hope Isabel’s story helps empower readers to be true to themselves. Isabel has relatable drama with her twin sister and her friends and she has to figure out how to stay together while growing apart.”
