Lasse Wellander, who was famous for being ABBA’s guitarist for years, has passed away – here’s a look at the rest of the band members who are still alive in 2023.
The death of ABBA‘s longtime guitarist was announced on his official Facebook page over the weekend. The other members of the group have all shared their condolences for their dear pal and talented musician, whose role was pivotal in the band’s unmeasurable success.
His most recent contribution as an ABBA band member was for the 2021 album Voyage, which won two nods at the Grammys 2023.
Lasse Wellander passes away
Lasse passed away at the age of 70. The statement confirming his death revealed that the musician took his last breath on Good Friday, April 7, after battling cancer.
He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his demise.
His family wrote in the note on social media: “You were an amazing musician and humble as few, but above all, you were a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. Kind, safe, caring and loving … and so much more, that cannot be described in words.”
Lasse started playing for ABBA after he joined the other members on a tour in 1974. He recorded for the band in the years 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1980.
At the beginning of his career as a musician, Lasse joined the band Peps & Blue Quality, when he was only 16 years old. The band later came to be known as Nature.
ABBA members still alive in 2023
All four members of the Swedish supergroup are alive as of April 2023.
Its lead singer, Agnetha Fältskog, has stayed away from the public eye for years. After releasing three albums following her first divorce from Björn Ulvaeus in 1980, she married her second husband, Thoms Sonnenfield, in 1990, but they got divorced in 1993. She was in the news in 2004 when she signed a solo record deal.

Björn, now 77, shares two children with his former wife and fellow band member Agnetha. He and his ex-spouse continued to make music together for ABBA even after their separation.
Björn also got married to his second wife, Lena Källersjö, and the couple reportedly announced their plans for divorce in 2022, ending more than four decades of marriage.
ABBA vocalist Benny Andersson, who was married to another band member, Anni-Frid Lyngs, worked with the trio until their hiatus in 1982. He released his first solo album in 1987 and is currently believed to be performing with Benny Andersson’s Orkester at the age of 76.
Anni-Frid continued to make solo albums after ABBA went on a break and got married again after marriage with Benny came to end. She and Prince Henrich Ruzzo were married until the latter’s death in 1999. She lost her daughter in a car accident a year prior to her husband’s passing.
ABBA’s official website has noted that she is “devoting herself to charity work.”
All four ABBA members were seen together at the premiere of their virtual concert series in London in November 2021.
Band pays tribute to the late guitarist
All the members of ABBA paid tribute to Lasse in a joint statement posted to the band’s official Instagram account.
The caption for the black and white picture of the musician read: “Lasse was a dear friend, a fun guy and a superb guitarist. The importance of his creative input in the recording studio as well as his rock solid guitar work on stage was immense.
“We mourn his tragic and premature death and remember the kind words, the sense of humour, the smiling face, the musical brilliance of the man who played such an integral role in the ABBA story. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
