Michael Owen has praised Cody Gakpo for his ‘absolutely brilliant’ run that started off Liverpool’s humiliation of Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
When the day started, Liverpool fans would have taken a simple 1-0 win. A clean sheet and a narrow three points against their in-form rivals.
Whilst Jurgen Klopp’s men had kept four clean sheets on the bounce in the Premier League, those from Old Trafford, were riding a wave under Erik ten Hag.

There was talk of a quadruple. Liverpool fans will remember their own talk last season.
But Man United were scoring goals for fun. There were Fergie-style comebacks. Late winners. Goals were coming from everywhere. And that League Cup final triumph to back it all up.
But that’s when the Liverpool of old emerged and provided the embarrassment of all embarrassment for Erik ten Hag’s men, with Owen praising Gakpo, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/23).
“It was a very good goal (opener), from his (Gakpo’s) point of view,” said Owen. “He is the original one that makes the run out wide.

“It didn’t come to him initially, but then he makes the second run inside, then cuts onto the right foot and uses the defender Martinez to bend it around. It’s a beautiful goal. A really good individual goal from Gakpo.
“This is a brilliant run. An absolutely brilliant run from Gakpo.”

GAKPO STARTING TO WARM-UP
When the Netherlands international joined the club, the 23-year-old landed on the doorstep of a team in decline and in serious need of change.
Many things were going wrong, from top to bottom and Gakpo just got sucked into all of the club’s troubles.
But, fast forward to the present, and after a few games, Gakpo is starting to cook and find his feet. And it could also be argued that so are Liverpool, even if they are heading out of the Champions League.
