22.6mph: Liverpool target Matheus Nunes now clocked as the Premier League

Liverpool are very keen to sign Matheus Nunes this summer as Jürgen Klopp aims to revamp his midfield department.

The Reds are in desperate need of some fresh options in that area, with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to leave when their contracts expire in July, while the likes of James Milner and Jordan Henderson aren’t getting any younger.

It was Fabrizio Romano who revealed that Liverpool want to sign Nunes – now, Klopp’s interest may have gone up a gear.

What’s the story?

Well – according to Squawka – Nunes has been clocked running at a top speed of 22.6mph this season, making him the fastest central midfielder in the entire Premier League.

For context, Darwin Nunez – who we all know is rapid – has been clocked at 22.69mph.

That will surely make Klopp sit up and take notice – the Wolves No.27 is also hugely effective when it comes to transitional play thanks to his speed, as you can see below.

The German’s best sides throughout his managerial career have been built upon a focus on physical prowess, with energy, pace and technical ability in as many areas as possible helping him create successful teams.

Powerhouses such as Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum, Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan are a few examples.

Therefore, Nunes arriving at Anfield could be the first building block in restoring Liverpool to what they once were under Klopp.

Liverpool in a strong position to sign Matheus Nunes

In our view, it would be a surprise if Nunes doesn’t join Liverpool this summer – regardless of whether Wolves avoid relegation or not.

The Telegraph believe Liverpool have made a commitment to bid £44m for the Portugal international this summer after opting against a deal last summer, as they felt he wasn’t quite ready for the Premier League.

It comes after The Athletic added that Nunes primarily joined Wolves on the basis that he would be allowed to leave if a bigger side came in for his signature.

By all accounts, it almost sounds as if the Portuguese playmaker is merely on loan at Wolves this season before joining the Reds, and we would be shocked if he isn’t a Liverpool player next term.
