Jennifer Aniston was forced to cut ties with Chelsea Handler after diving “headfirst” into their friendship, according to a new report.
While the “Friends” star, 56, is “private” and wishes to remain out of the public eye, the comedian, 50, “wants to be front and center,” a source told the Daily Mail on Thursday.
“Perhaps a breakdown was always inevitable,” the insider added.
When the duo met on “Chelsea Lately” in 2009, they “went from not knowing each other to being together 24/7,” according to the outlet.
Aniston, however, allegedly began to take issue with Handler bringing up her — and her ex-husband Brad Pitt — in interviews.
Notably, the former talk show host once shaded Pitt, 61, and his second ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, in an interview, joking that the “f–king lunatic” actress had led her “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star to drugs and alcohol.
Aniston’s second ex-husband, Justin Theroux, allegedly was not a fan of “rude and obnoxious” Handler, whom the source claimed had encouraged the “Morning Show” star to “act single” during their marriage.
When Aniston and Theroux, 53, ended their relationship in 2018, she was “paranoid … that people around her were leaking stories to the press,” according to the report.
The insider claimed to the Daily Mail, “Chelsea was still talking about Jennifer in interviews, and Jennifer automatically pointed the finger at her.”
While the stand-up star told “The Project” viewers in 2019 not to “believe any of” the rumors about their friendship woes, things reportedly are “not the same as” before and “never will be.”
The source further alleged, “Chelsea seemed willing to do anything to be a star, and Jennifer was already a big name, so of course there were hints of jealousy.”
Another insider told the British tabloid that Handler was in one of Aniston’s “wide group of friends … but she never made it into her inner circle like Courteney Cox or Jimmy Kimmel.”
However, the “Marley & Me” star notably still engages with the “Chelsea” alum’s social media uploads.
Reps for Aniston and Handler did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.
