“It always happens on journeys … With ‘Careless Whisper’ I remember exactly where it first came to me, where I came up with the sax line”

What is Careless Whisper about?

George said in his memoire Bare that he recalls events from his childhood in his songs.

Careless Whisper is about how Michael was with a girl and then started to see another girl and cheated on her.

George explained that when he was 12 years old he had a crush on a girl named Jane.

He would always see her when he was chaperoning his sister at the ice rink in Queensway, London.

But he said that she would not give him her attention because he was a fat pre-teen with glasses.

When George was sixteen, he had his first girlfriend – Helen.

However he met Jane again and she showed interest now that he had changed and was no longer fat.

Jane and George started seeing each other, while he was still with Helen.

In Bare he said about it: “I thought I was being smart – I had gone from being a total loser to being a two-timer.”
