Valerie Bertinelli is healing after being “mercilessly mocked” about her weight in a past relationship.
The actress felt triggered while walking in a pair of old pants on Sunday, telling her Instagram followers in a candid Story that she had “activated … a small hidden bruise.”
The Golden Globe winner pointed out the “particular sound” her clothing made while “rubbing together,” noting, “You can probably hear them.”
She explained that one of her exes told her she was “too lazy to do anything about it [so] they wouldn’t rub together.”
Although the past comments once led the 62-year-old to put the jeans “away forever” and “even change the way” she walked in them, the negativity no longer matters to her.
“That’s in the past,” Bertinelli said. “I’m so grateful that the work that I’m doing on healing is working. So it’s making me giggle now. … Now I can wear them, hear that sound and that’s the sound of freedom.”
The “One Day at a Time” alum went on to pre-emptively clap back at haters criticizing her for appearing to not “let go of it and move on.”

She clarified, “This is called moving on. This is called healing. … Hidden bruises are something that emotional, verbal and mental abuse do to you that people can’t see but we kind of deal with every day.”
Last month, the “Kids Baking Championship” host seemingly spoke about the same ex referring to her as “fat and lazy” in an emotional video.
Bertinelli told her followers that she was “long over the narcissist” and trying to understand what allowed her to “tolerate the intolerable” for so long.
“I have moved on from the s–tty part,” the Daytime Emmy winner said in the January footage. “I am going into the really, really hard part that has the most benefits to it.”
Bertinelli has been married twice, finalizing her divorces from rocker Eddie Van Halen in 2007 and financial planner Tom Vitale in 2022.
