Tyler Perry compared the abuse his mother endured from his father to the treatment Meghan Markle received from the royal family, revealing just how afraid the Duchess of Sussex sounded when she reached out for his help in 2020.
“I could hear the fear [in her voice]. It was palpable. I mean, I could hear it,” Perry revealed in the final episode of the Sussexes’ Netflix docuseries, which aired Thursday.
The 53-year-old “Madea” star added, “This woman was abused. And so was [Prince Harry].”
Perry — who has spoken about his traumatic childhood in the past — explained, “I saw my mother be abused for years; I knew the symptoms. I knew what it was like.”
“[Meghan] was afraid of [the royal family] destroying her, or going crazy, or them making her think she was crazy.”
The comedian compared the royal family’s actions, including taking away the Sussexes’ security detail in 2020, as something a “batterer” would do.
“To use the institution to try and do all the things a batterer would do, like ‘We’re gonna cut off the money. We’re not gonna leave you security. We’re gonna do all those things to make you comply and come back,’” he said.

“And for the both of them to have the wherewithal to say, ‘I don’t give a damn if it’s the palace. I’m out of here.’ I applauded that.”
Perry — who is the godfather of the Sussexes’ 1-year-old daughter, Lilibet — opened his Los Angeles home to Harry, now 38, and Meghan, now 41, in March 2020 after their location leaked after arriving to Canada from the UK.
Markle said she reached out to Perry in a state of duress, crying on the phone and asking for his help, despite having never met him in person.
“I was just a wreck, I was just crying and crying,” the “Suits” alum said. “Sometimes it’s easier to just open up to someone who knows nothing at all. And that was that moment with me and Tyler.”
The Duke later revealed he believes the palace leaked his and Markle’s location to the press, citing an email he sent his father, King Charles, that leaked in the tabloids.
“That was the giveaway,” the prince explained. “I was like, ‘Wow. Our story, our lives, literally got taken from underneath us.’”
