Toby Keith shares update on stomach cancer battle: ‘You have to prepare’

Toby Keith said his battle with stomach cancer is heading in a “positive trend” — just over a year after sharing his diagnosis.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” he told The Oklahoman at a gala ahead of his Toby Keith & Friends Golf Tournament.

“Basically, everything is in a real positive trend… [but] you never know with cancer, so you have to prepare.”

The country music star, 61, said he hopes to get “out on the road” in the fall if he’s able to get his energy levels back up.

“I’ve got more wind. And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere, just to see if I can get through two hours,” Keith said.

“All I gotta do is see if I can get through two or three nights of work and get a little break in this chemo, and we’ll go back to work.”

The “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” crooner explained that he’s still undergoing chemo treatments.

However, he shared that his only tumor has decreased in size by a third and that his bloodwork has been encouraging.

“I expect next time I look for that tumor to be even less,” he told the outlet. “And I’ve only got one that’s shown up.”

“I need time to breathe, recover and relax,” he told his fans at the time.

In December 2022, the “Red Solo Cup” singer admitted his cancer was “debilitating.”

“It’s pretty debilitating to have to go through all that, but as long as everything stays hunky-dory, then we’ll look at something good in the future,” he told CMT Hot 20 Countdown, adding that he was looking to “getting back into fighting shape.”
