The writer and illustrator was well known as a self-styled “grumpy old man” who lived simply — driving an old car and buying clothes from a charity shop.
He died in August aged 88. His wife Jean died of leukaemia in 1973.

Liz Benjamin, his partner of more than 40 years, died in 2015.
Briggs, who also created Fungus the Bogeyman, left his home near Lewes, East Sussex, to her children.

He decreed that his gravestone be inscribed: “Raymond is not a normal person” — a favourite saying of his and first uttered by Liz’s three-year-old granddaughter Connie in 1997.
