‘The Diplomat’: When Does Season 2 of the Netflix Political Drama Premiere?

The Diplomat is on its way back to Netflix but when? Find out when season 2 of the political thriller starring Keri Russell as diplomat Kate Wyler premieres ahead. Plus, details on what new episodes will be about following season 1’s cliffhanger.

‘The Diplomat’ Season 2 premieres on Halloween

When does The Diplomat Season 2 premiere? Netflix opted for treats and no tricks this Halloween with the political thriller. Season 2 of The Diplomat premieres on Oct. 31, 2024. Happy Halloween, indeed! So, come Halloween, grab some candy and cozy up on the couch for new episodes.

It comes roughly a year and a half after season 1 premiered in April 2023, which earned Russell an Emmy nod. Her character, Kate, quickly became ambassador to Britain after an attack on a U.K. warship.

She headed across the pond with her U.S. diplomat husband, Hal, portrayed by Rufus Sewell, in tow. Over time Kate discovered nothing about what brought her to the U.K. was simple.

The Diplomat Season 1 left viewers guessing with the explosion. Now, in season 2, it seems Kate’s not only dealing with the aftermath but also her theory on what really happened with the British warship attack.

She is, as showrunner Debora Cahn told Entertainment Weekly, “pretty sure it’s [Trowbridge] the prime minister” played by Rory Kinnear. “So how do you prove that when you’re inside the U.K.?”

It’s a complex situation for Kate given the two nations’ “unique” connection. “One of the unique things about the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. is that we share intelligence,” Cahn said. “So we have a deal that we don’t spy on each other. And even if we wanted to, it would be really hard because we share everything.”

“So how do you prove it? And then if you prove it, what the hell do you do about it? Season 1 was [about] building relationships with people. But can you still trust them?”

Meanwhile, Russell described the new installment like this: “It raises the temperature. What’s fun about this season is realizing that it might be the people closest to you who are involved in something nefarious.”

Allison Janney joins ‘The Diplomat’ cast

The return of the Netflix original series introduces Allison Janney—in a guest-starring role—as U.S. Vice President Grace Penn. After being mentioned in season 1 but never seen, Kate finally comes face to face with her in season 2. (They dramatically make eye contact in the teaser trailer, above.)

Viewers know Janney’s character as someone on her way out of the White House following a scandal. And, more importantly, the person Kate is being looked at to replace as the president’s no. 2.

“The VP thinks Kate’s after her job,” Cahn told Tudum. “She’s not entirely wrong. Kate thinks she understands the VP. She is mistaken.”

Until new episodes of The Diplomat begin streaming, fans can catch up on all the drama by watching season 1 on Netflix.
