Taylor Swift’s dad, Scott Swift, is recovering from major heart surgery.
Scott, 73, underwent quintuple bypass surgery over a month ago, a rep for the pop superstar told TMZ Wednesday.
Taylor, 35, her brother, Austin Swift, 33, and Scott’s wife of 37 years, Andrea Swift, 67, were by the patriarch’s side from the operation through the recovery process.
Scott is doing well and feeling fantastic, according to his daughter’s rep, who made sure to note that the procedure was not the result of a heart attack.
During a quintuple bypass surgery, a surgeon uses healthy blood vessels from other part’s of the patient’s body to create five new pathways (bypasses) for blood flow around blocked coronary arteries in the heart.
While Taylor has not yet commented on the situation, she has spoken about Scott’s past battle with an unspecified type of cancer.
“Both of my parents have had cancer, and my mom is now fighting her battle with it again,” the Grammy winner revealed in a March 2019 essay for Elle.
“It’s taught me that there are real problems and then there’s everything else. My mom’s cancer is a real problem. I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress and prayers to real problems now.”
Taylor told Variety the following January that doctors “found a brain tumor” while Andrea “was going through treatment” for her breast cancer.
“It’s just been a really hard time for us as a family,” she lamented at the time.
Andrea was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, her daughter announced in a Tumblr post in April of that year.
