Selena Gomez on sharing she can’t carry children: ‘That’s what my life is like’

Speaking at a recent Women in Film event, the “Love On” songstress defended her decision to open up about being unable to carry children.

“I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help and when you want help,” she said (via Entertainment Weekly). “That is not shameful.”

“So yeah, I shared that I can’t carry a child,” she continued. “Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar. F*** off! That’s what my life is like.”

Gomez has long been candid about her life and health journey. In 2015, she underwent a kidney transplant after announcing she had lupus. Later, after being diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, she opened up about the experience in My Mind & Me, a 2022 documentary.

Gomez continued, telling the audience the reason why she revealed that she couldn’t carry children stems from her desire to be “an advocate for women.”

“Because everybody’s going through something. I don’t have it all put together. I’m me, and that’s all I can be,” the two-time Grammy nominee said before encouraging attendees to be themselves.

“So do not ever let anyone tell you that you are not a good person, that you aren’t kind, that you won’t treat people with respect,” she said. “Cause that is not lame. That is so cool of you guys. And that is the fact. So screw anyone who tells you you’re a victim—you’re a survivor, in my book.”

Selena Gomez ‘had to grieve’ not being able to carry children

The Only Murders in the Building star’s comments came after she discussed motherhood in a  Vanity Fair cover interview. “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she told the publication. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez also said she’s come to terms with it and, as a result, has made her “really thankful” for other avenues to parenthood.

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she said of someday becoming a parent. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms,” she explained, noting she’s “one of those people.”

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different,” she added. “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
