Life behind bars is an abysmal experience, insists anyone who has spent an extended period in lockup. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is expecting just how different life is in federal lockup right now. The music mogul has been in custody since September 2024. While his legal team initially argued for the rapper to await trial at one of his luxury properties, a federal judge denied the request. Since September, Diddy has been housed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. Not only are his movements limited, but he’s restricted to how much money he can spend while behind bars.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ spending habits are seriously limited behind bars
A lot has changed for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs since he was arrested in September 2024. While his trial date draws near, the mogul is said to be making it work behind bars, although it’s taken a toll on him. His spending habits have been severely slashed. According to several reports, Diddy can use the commissary at the Metropolitan Detention Center to purchase personal items, but he can only spend so much. Each inmate can spend $180 every two weeks at the in-house store.
The budget has to cover everything the music mogul might need or want. Diddy must purchase personal hygiene items, over-the-counter medications, clothing, correspondence supplies, and snacks. Other comfort items, like basic electronics, must be purchased from the commissary, too.
Not only is Diddy limited to how much money he can spend on commissary items, but he’s also limited to how much of one product he can purchase at any given time. According to the Department of Justice, items like soda, potato chips, and condiments are all subject to purchase limits. Strict limits on food purchases are imposed due to hygiene, hoarding, and resale concerns.
There are some items, however, that are not limited. Personal hygiene items, over-the-counter medication, and greeting cards are not subject to purchase limits. Money can be added to an inmate’s account whenever they need to make purchases from friends and family. Inmates can also earn money working at the facility. It’s unclear what Diddy does with his time every day.
He used to spend a lot of money before his arrest
While Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is now limited to how much money he can spend in a month, it wasn’t always that way. Combs was more than happy to show off his wealth in the past. Before lockup, Diddy spent lavishly purchasing real estate, vehicles, and jewelry. He owns several high-end homes. His homes in Miami and Los Angeles are just two. Federal agents raided both in September 2024. He also has a pretty impressive car collection and spared no expense regarding his clothing and accessories. While his material goods are safe for now, and his net worth still hovers around $300 million, a lot can change as the legal process progresses.
Not only is Diddy facing federal charges, but there are a variety of lawsuits his legal team must deal with. Diddy’s fortune may be drained by the time all is said and done. For now, he’ll continue to rely on friends and family to help him thrive behind bars. Chocolate and potato chips may not have been a luxury for Diddy during his music career, but they certainly are now.
The famed rapper’s trial will begin in May 2025, but a delay is possible.
