Sarah Ferguson feels ‘liberated’ to dish on royals after Queen’s death

Sarah Ferguson is ready to talk.

Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, who had a close relationship with Queen Elizabeth II, said in a new interview that she feels “liberated” to speak about the royal family after the monarch’s death.

“It’s like I’ve taken the mental shackles out of my brain. I don’t know whether it’s the Queen passing on that I now think I can just sort of say openly what I want to say without worrying I’m going to offend somebody,” Ferguson, 63, said on “Good Morning America” Tuesday.

“I’m really, truly authentic Sarah now,” she added.

The Queen died in September 2022 at the age of 96 in the midst of a turbulent time for her family, including her son Andrew, 63, stepping back from public duties over his ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and her grandson Prince Harry leaving the UK for America with his wife, Meghan Markle.

Ferguson, a royal rebel herself who divorced Andrew in 1996, acknowledged on “GMA” that her new novel, “A Most Intriguing Lady,” is partly based on her own story.

“I think that in life, it’s not just royal institution and monarchy, it’s any bureaucracy that tries to allow this redhead to conform,” she said while comparing herself to the book’s main character, Lady Mary.

“I’m not good at confirming. I believe in the absolute, unequivocal institution of the monarchy.”

While the Duchess of York admitted she feels free to dish on her former in-laws these days, she still holds the Queen near and dear to her heart.

“The most incredible thing about Her Majesty was that she listened. She really was my idol. She really was my legend,” she told ABC News’ Juju Chang, noting she now takes care of the late sovereign’s beloved dogs.

“The corgis live with me, and we go out, and then they bark into the air, and I think the Queen’s with me when they do.”

As for the Queen’s successor, King Charles III, and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, Ferguson added, “I totally support [them]. … I’ve known them all my life.”

The duchess also offered praise to Harry, whom she is “thrilled” to see “so happy” living in California.

“He’s got this lovely wife, and he’s got beautiful children,” she said.

“He deserves to be loved like that,” she continued, adding that the late Princess Diana would have been “very proud” of her sons, Harry and Prince William, and grandchildren.

Ferguson is now a grandmother, too.

Her and Andrew’s younger daughter, Princess Eugenie, welcomed a son, August, in February 2021 and is expecting a second child. The former couple’s elder daughter, Princess Beatrice, meanwhile, had a baby girl, Sienna, in September 2021.
