The 76-year-old died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to his death certificate obtained by The Blast on Friday.
Before his death, the actors had filmed a Super Bowl commercial for FanDuel with former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
The commercial will air during the Sunday game.
On Friday, Sylvester Stallone, his Rocky co-star, posted an emotional video on Instagram.
“Hello everyone. Today is an incredibly sad day for me. I’m so torn up, I’m trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an intricate part of my life, my success, everything about it,” he began as he stood in front of a painting of himself and Weathers.
“I give him incredible credit and kudos because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness, but I didn’t realize how great.
“I never could have accomplished what we did with Rocky without him. He was absolutely brilliant. His voice, his size, his power, his athletic ability, but more importantly his heart, his soul. It’s a horrible loss.”
Stallone discussed the painting behind him saying how that was the last time they were in the ring together.
“I’ll never forget it. He was magic and I was so fortunate to be a part of his life. So Apollo, keep punching.”
