Rock icon Noel Gallagher reveals reason why adoring fans are disappointed when they meet him

HIS hedonist antics in the Nineties saw Noel Gallagher partying for days on end in his Supernova Heights house, with his parties so wild that his cats Benson and Hedges had nervous breakdowns.

But now the Oasis star has admitted he lives a far more respectable life — so much so that he reckons his fans are disappointed when they meet him.

Noel explained: “I can go to the supermarket now and do a shop for the weekend and no one will bat an eyelid.

“I think people get a bit disappointed when they bump into you buying soup.

“They kind of don’t want you to inhabit the same supermarket queue as them as they think you’re on a private jet with hookers, which frankly, is where I should be.

“But I’m f***ing buying brown rice or salmon. I can sense the disappointment in them.

“I’ve been asked many times in the supermarket, ‘What’re you doing here?’

“I’m waiting for a taxi… what the f**k do you think I’m doing here.

“Just f***ing doing my own shopping.

“They go, ‘You do your own shopping?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I had to fire my butler’ – which is another thing I should have.”

It’s a far cry from Oasis’ heyday, when Noel let slip he used to bribe his fans into heading down to Waitrose because he couldn’t be bothered.

He added: “I can’t remember ever going to the shops in the Nineties.

“I used to get fans to go shopping for us.

“They would go, ‘Can I have a picture?’ and I’d give them a shopping list and go, ‘I’ll tell you what, if you go and get us that I’ll give you a picture and an autograph and a cuddle as well.’”

Noel is currently on tour with his band the High Flying Birds off the back of their latest record Council Skies, which was written during the breakdown of his 20-year relationship with his ex-wife Sara MacDonald.

Speaking during an interview in Australia, Noel said: “There was a lot of time spent at home, reflecting, and my family didn’t really react that well to lockdown.

“So there’s certain songs, and sections of songs, that are very personal.

“I think as an artist you’re looking for something to write about from a place of truth.

“Most of the time I’m just making s**t up and making it sound meaningful.

“But on this record, a lot of it is coming from a place of truth.”
