Rio took on the difficult role of being a single parent after losing his first wife, having to learn a lot along the way.
The football pundit opened up about his experiences in his BBC documentary Being Mum and Dad.
He has admitted that he has taken on a strict parenting style but felt it was necessary to give his children the upbringing they deserved.
Rio opened up to The Sun saying “Yeah I am quite strict. I think it’s finding the balance really. You’ve got to be strict, but you’ve got to allow the kids to have a good time and enjoy themselves, within reason.
“When it comes to things like snacks, it’s doing it at the right time and controlling the amounts when they’re young kids. My kids are good like that, we’ve got them into a good routine.
“When we watch football or watch a movie, that’s our snack time and we love it.”
He also spoke about taking on the role of mum after his wife died, he said: “Your appreciation for mothers and how they cope and how they deal with the school run, just doing that… there’s so much more that goes into it that mums do, that many of us men don’t even consider.
“The preparation that goes into it the night before, uniforms, books, breakfasts – and the first time [after] that they had to go to school, and before I knew it they were late.
“And I did think, what am I going to do?
“It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got, or if you’re in the public eye or not, I think we all come under the same type of stresses at that point.”
