Here’s why Princess Diana’s ex-bodyguard places the blame for her death on Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al Fayed.

Princess Diana was not the only person who died following a car crash in Paris on the fateful night in 1997. The driver of the vehicle, Henri Paul, was also killed as was the princess’s boyfriend Dodi Fayed. An inquest ultimately determined that Paul, who was drinking alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel and fleeing from the paparazzi, was responsible for the crash.

Now though, Diana’s former bodyguard is claiming that Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al Fayed, is responsible for what happened that night.

Here’s more on that and why another one of Diana’s employees is calling the ex-Harrods owner a “puppet master.”

Paul Burrell was Princess Diana’s butler and one of her closest confidants. He began working for the royal family in the ’80s and served as Queen Elizabeth II’s personal footman. In 1987, he was moved to the household of then-Prince Charles and Diana. When they separated, Burrell stayed on the princess’s staff and looked after her and her sons until Diana’s death.

Burrell recently revealed that Mohamed once made a comment to Diana about sleeping with her before she started dating Dodi. But when she began her relationship with his son, Mohamed became like a father figure to the princess. Burrell recalled that Mohamed would buy Diana lavish gifts and let her use a secret entrance into his Harrods department stores. He explained that Mohamed offered Harrods as a safe haven for Diana.

“Fayed saw a chance to bring her into his domain,” Burrell said per Times of India. “He let her use a secret tunnel that takes you under and back up into the store. He told her she could have anything she wanted for free, which she declined, and let her and the boys do late-night shopping. What he did was give her something the royals didn’t give her. He facilitated an escape for her — and he knew what he was doing.”

Burrell added that while everyone concentrated on Dodi and the princess, Mohamed was the “puppet master.”

Someone else who used to work for the princess spoke about how Mohamed gained the princess’s trust and then orchestrated just about every move Diana and Dodi made together.

Ken Wharfe was Princess Diana’s bodyguard inspector from 1988 to 1993 and he believes Mohamed was responsible for the horrific car crash in Paris.

According to Wharfe, it’s Mohamed who he feels is responsible because “he was controlling this whole affair, the whole movement of Diana and his son, Dodi, from his office in Park Lane.”

Wharfe shared that his team had protected Diana for 15 years while Al Fayed’s team of bodyguards had been in charge for just eight weeks when the tragedy struck. He added that the driver, Paul, was one of Mohomed’s employees as he worked for the Ritz Hotel, and “the one thing that could have prevented the crash would have been removing Henri Paul from the driving seat.”
