Princess Anne Admits That Having a Royal Title Isn’t Always Easy: ‘There Are Downsides’

Princess Anne, the sister of King Charles, has been a working royal for most of her life. While Anne is dedicated to the job, she recognizes that it does have some negatives.

The royal family has been around for hundreds of years, but in the modern age, they have made more of an effort to integrate into normal society. The royals these days do life so differently than royals did decades earlier, and Prince William and Princess Catherine, the future king and queen, are giving the next generation of royals the most normal lives possible.

One person who understands the difficulties that comes with a royal title is Princess Anne. In an interview, Anne once defended the idea that some royals in the extended family have chosen not to give their kids royal titles: “There are downsides.”

Princess Anne defends some royals over not having royal titles

In this new royal age, royals are starting to bend the rules a little bit to lean further into their own preferences. In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made waves when they announced that they would be disassociating from the royal family in favor of a more private life in the United States. And Prince William and Kate Middleton moved out of Kensington Palace in 2022 in order to relocate their children to the more private area of Windsor, where the kids could live a more normal life.

In a 2020 interview with Vanity Fair, Princess Anne defended the idea that she chose not to give her daughter and son-in-law, Zara and Mike Tindall, royal titles. “I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles,” Anne said. “So I think that was probably the right thing to do.”

Anne’s grandchildren, Mia, Lena, and Lucas Tindall, also do not have royal titles. They’re close in age to William and Kate’s children who, of course, have the formal royal titles of prince and princess. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s kids do as well.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children have grown close to the Tindall kids

When Harry and Meghan welcomed their first child, many people thought that the Wales and Sussex kids were going to be thick as thieves. However, over time, this proved not to be the case. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet live in California with their parents, while Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis live in the United Kingdom.

Instead, the Wales kids have grown very close with Mia, Lena, and Lucas Tindall. The kids reportedly bond over their love for soccer and the outdoors, and they have started to spend more time together as they’ve grown older.
