Prince William and Kate Middleton began dating while in college. And William once revealed the one thing that made the couple’s relationship work.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have built quite a life together. The Prince and Princess of Wales first met back in the early 2000s, and the two have been inseparable (for the most part) ever since. The two did hit a couple of bumps in the road while they were dating, but they ultimately realized that they were right for each other, and William proposed in 2010.

During the couple’s engagement interview, William revealed the one thing that made a “good foundation” for the two as a couple.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were friends first

William and Kate met during their freshman year of college, but the two started out as just friends. The Prince and Princess of Wales were introduced pretty early on during their college experience, and by sophomore year, they were living together among a group of friends. It allowed William and Kate to get to know each other on a deeper friendship level before they started anything romantic, and William said that it was the best thing they could have done.

“We were friends for over a year first and it just sort of blossomed from then on,” William said of the couple’s romance. “We just spent more time with each other, had a good giggle, had lots of fun and realized we shared the same interests and just had a really good time.”

William continued, “When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her … I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there. But we ended up being friends for a while and that was a good foundation.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for more than 13 years

William proposed to his wife in 2010, and the two tied the knot in 2011. Over the last 13 years, they have welcomed three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, and they are now getting ready to someday take the throne.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been working to give their children the most normal lives possible, and in 2022, they moved from Kensington Palace into Adelaide Cottage, where they can be further away from the fanfare of the royal family. William also called 2024 the most difficult year of his life after Kate Middleton was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy. As of late summer 2024, Kate has announced she is cancer free.
