They say “for better or worse, for richer or poorer” but some are claiming that there’s no way Meghan Markle will stay with Prince Harry if he goes broke. Those opinions come on the heels of reports that the Sussexes are having some financial woes.
The prince and former Suits star recently made some cuts to their staff letting go of several full-time employees including Charlie Gipson, their Director of Communications in Europe; Kyle Boulia, their Deputy Press Secretary; Lianne Cashin, the Head of Operations at Archewell, and a social media manager.
According to Page Six, those staffers were given their walking papers because the Sussexes need to “save cash.” They currently have some big expenses such as an annual security bill believed to cost a few million, a hefty bill for staffers who work at their estate in Montecito, the upkeep of their $14 million mansion, and a yearly property tax of $288,000.
And now, there’s chatter that Meghan feels Harry isn’t pulling his weight and won’t be able to keep up with her lifestyle soon.
Royal commentator Mark Dolan shared his opinion on the reports that Meghan won’t stay married to the prince if he doesn’t find a way to generate more income for himself.
“Meghan is the most competitive person on the planet. If she wants to keep up with Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey, she needs more money,” Dolan said. “Currently, she has more money going out than coming in. They have private security, which costs them $2- $3 million annually. These two are getting through cash, and the problem is that Harry is not just too poor for Meghan. In a couple of years, Harry will be flat broke, which is why he needs to make $100 million and fast.
“He has to keep up with Meghan’s expectations, which are endless and infinite. Harry has already squandered $3 million on failed court cases against newspapers, and he has more court cases to come because he loves suing people, but he’s fighting a losing battle; it’s costing him a lot of cash.”
Author claims Meghan thought Prince Harry was a ‘billionaire’
A big claim has been made that Meghan never expected to money issues because she thought Prince Harry’s wealth was much greater than it was. That was one of the topics written about in the book Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants by royal expert Tom Quinn.
According to the author, Meghan’s American upbringing is why she made “assumptions” about the British royal family that were not in touch with reality.
In Quinn’s book, which was excerpted by The Times, he wrote that when Meghan found out Harry was only worth around £20 million ($25 million), she “quickly realized” that she needed to “reassess other assumptions she’d made about this strange new family.”
Quinn added: “Meghan Markle had a typically American view of the royal family before she joined it — for her, life was all about castles, glittering balls, and limitless wealth and ease. As one royal staff member put it, ‘She expected a billionaire and she got a millionaire.’”
