He stretched back on a brick wall and flashed a smile as he showcased the latest garments from his Overnight Angels Crew brand.
The Brit business-owner was joined by his very famous father, Def Leppard’s bass guitarist Rick Savage.
The 64-year-old gave his offspring a boost when they kick-started the cutting-edge brand, which is now also stocked in New York department store Bloomingdales, during the coronavirus pandemic.
Yet Rick, who oozed cool in a cream jacket, jeans and blue trainers in the same snap, is best known for his role in the Sheffield-based rock band.
The Sheffield-born dad of three is one of the founding members of the Pour Some Sugar On Me hitmakers, who shook up the rock scene from 1976.
Yet his fashion brand is also heavily influenced by rock ‘n’ roll and motorcycle culture – and is also a nod to Rick’s life before finding fame.
The collection is inspired by the title track of Ian Hunter’s 1977 album Overnight Angels, which was released the same year aspiring footballer Rick was let go by his club Sheffield United and formed Def Leppard.
Rick previously exclusively told The Sun of the collection and said: “I really wanted to pay homage to such a pivotal moment in my life.
“And to be able work on this alongside my son, Scott, means so much more.”
Designer Nick Holland – the creative force behind Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green brand – is also on board, which Rick said is a major coup.
“I think it represents us in the same way as the Pretty Green stuff represented Liam.
“What I liked about it as an outsider is it truly represented him, that’s the feeling I got.”
The brand manufactures its pieces in limited edition collections and promises nostalgic authenticity that thunders above the noise.
What is a Nepo Baby?
A ‘nepo baby’ is a colloquial term used to describe individuals who have gained opportunities or success in their careers primarily due to familial connections or the influence of their well-known or wealthy parents, rather than solely through their own talent, skills, or efforts.
The term ‘nepo’ is short for ‘nepotism’, which refers to favouritism granted to relatives or close friends, often in a professional context.
Key Characteristics:
- Inherited advantage: Nepo babies often benefit from their family’s established reputation, wealth, or industry connections.
- Access to networks: They typically have easier access to influential networks and resources within their chosen field.
- Public perception: The term can carry a negative connotation, implying that their success is not entirely merit-based.
Industries Affected:
- Entertainment: Many actors, musicians, and other performers are often labeled as nepo babies if they have famous parents.
- Business: Individuals who inherit or are given significant roles in family-owned businesses.
- Politics: Politicians who follow in the footsteps of their parents or other relatives.
Examples:
- Children of famous actors who become actors themselves.
- Heirs to business empires who assume executive roles.
- Offspring of political figures who enter public office.
The concept of nepo babies is often debated, with some arguing that it undermines the notion of meritocracy.
Meanwhile, others believe that it is natural for families to support and help each other succeed.
Talking of the vibe of the brand, Foolin’ hitmaker Rick added to absolutelymagazines.com: “The Overnight Angels Crew is more street, urban style and OAC X Special Projects is my line – more classic rock ‘n’ roll with high end sophistication, not strictly biker stuff, it would appeal to a more rock-oriented crowd.
“We’re delighted with the way it has been received. It’s still early days but I honestly think there is a niche for it.
“I’ll be wearing some of my line on tour!”
Meanwhile, Scott often speaks out about the collections on thje brand’s YouTube page.
The tattooed northerner said in one clip “me and my dad have always been into fashion even from a young age.”
DEF HISTORY
Not many bands make it 45 continuous years in the business – and even fewer overcome the setbacks Def Leppard have.
The band’s drummer Rick Allen famously lost his arm following a car crash in 1985.
Against the odds, he remodelled his kit and played on the album Hysteria two years later – the band’s most successful to date selling over 20million copies globally.
Then in 1991, the band lost its talismanic guitar player Steve Clark to alcohol poisoning.
The driving force behind many of their most famous songs, Rick previously described him as a ‘genius’.
Rather than folding, the band then sought to pay tribute to him by continuing to play his music.
They recruited Vivian Campbell, who remains in the band to this day.
