Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry’s careers have followed similar trajectories. Cyrus’ brother believes this has been intentional on Perry’s part.
Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry both released new music in 2024 to middling reviews. The two pop stars have been in the public eye for years, with Perry breaking through as an artist in the same year Cyrus released her debut solo album. While their paths have diverged since then, Cyrus’ brother, Trace, believes Perry has ripped off his sister’s career. He recently went on a rant about her.
Miley Cyrus’ brother had some harsh words for Katy Perry
Trace Cyrus, the former guitarist for Metro Station, recently made it clear that he has never thought highly of Perry. He claimed Perry has responded to backlash by trying to copy Cyrus’ career.
“I first knew Katy Perry and her team were lame as f*** when her career was first dying,” he said in an Instagram video. “They were like, ‘Hmm, what can we do? What worked for Miley? She cut her hair off, and it broke the internet, and everybody freaked out, and she bleached it blonde. We should do that with you, Katy.’”
Both Perry and Cyrus have debuted blonde pixie cuts. Trace believes Perry has also tried to mimic Cyrus’ sound by collaborating with rappers. He doesn’t think she’s been nearly as successful as his sister.
“Guess what? [Trying to be like Miley] didn’t f***ing work,” Trace said. “And then they just tried some EDM song or some s*** because EDM is hot… and that didn’t f***ing work. Now we’re going to send your a** to space. Didn’t f***ing work.”
He suggested that Perry try a more original path in the future.
“It’s not working,” he said. “It’s backfiring. Stop.”
At this time, Perry has not responded to Trace’s criticisms of her career.
