The Duchess of Sussex is being heavily criticized for what she plans to do on Princess Diana’s birthday.
After a person dies there are a few dates their loved ones associate with them, and two of those days are usually the day they died and their birthday.
For Princess Diana, those days are the date of her death, Aug. 31, and her birthday, July 1. Now what her daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, is planning to do on the late princess’s birthday is drawing a ton of backlash as it’s being called “insensitive” and “tacky.”
What Meghan has planned on Princess Diana’s birthday
After Meghan’s As Ever items sold out for a second time, the duchess announced that her next product drop will include a Rosé wine and is set to be released on July 1. That date raised plenty of eyebrows, but not just because it is Princess Diana’s birthday. Many on social media also slammed Meghan’s choice to sell alcohol on that day since the vehicle her mother-in-law was in when it crashed was operated by a drunk driver.
The move has been labeled “tacky” with one person writing: “It’s incredibly tacky, especially given that this is alcohol–and one of the major contributing factors in Diana’s death was alcohol. Henri Paul, who was heavily intoxicated when he got behind the wheel. Both official inquiries into the crash found him at fault. Promoting alcohol in this context feels deeply tone-deaf and disturbingly insensitive.”
A second user agreed that it’s “tone deaf” and “insensitive,” posting: “Incredibly tone deaf & deeply insensitive. I can’t even begin to fathom what William must be feeling. The damage Harry’s allowed to be done to Diana’s memory at this point is immeasurable.”
Another person added: “Very tacky considering she never even met her. 50 bottles of wine does not constitute successful business sales for a day. No doubt it will be vastly overpriced.”
A fourth chimed in, “The worst of this is that Diana died in a crash by an intoxicated driver. That is an epic wrong by Meghan,” while a fifth person said, “My loved one passed as a result of alcohol. One would think respect would be the key.”
Royal expert says they are no longer surprised by anything Meghan does
Former press spokesman for the late Queen Elizabeth, Dickie Arbiter, spoke about the topic on The Sun’s show Royal Exclusive, saying: “I don’t think we should be surprised by anything she does and as far as bringing out a wine, it’s going to sell for something like $28. It’s a lot of money. And if you’re going to go into that sort of business, you’ve got to produce a lot of wine to make money.
“If her jam is anything to go by, it’s going to be sold out in about ten minutes. How many bottles is she producing? Who’s producing it? She’s not a wine expert. So, you know why go into something that you probably know nothing about?”
Arbiter’s tongue-in-cheek “sold out” comment stems from accusations that As Ever only produces a small amount of items available for purchase, which is why it sells out quickly. And some believe there’s a script being followed that every time Meghan launches more products, the public will be told that they have sold out again in minutes.
