Naomi grew up within the London Borough of Lambeth, around the areas of Brixton and Streatham in South London. She was raised by a Jamaican-born dancer by the name of Valerie Morris, 72.

The superstar’s father left the family when Valerie was four months pregnant with Naomi. She never met her father, who went unnamed on her birth certificate.

Throughout the years, Naomi has visited many of her pre-stardom stomping grounds, including paying a visit to South London state secondary school, Elmgreen School to inspire students on how to overcome rejection, back in 2019.

Naomi told the young hopefuls: “I feel like I’m coming home.” That same year, the legendary model accepted the Fashion Icon Award, at the British Fashion Council’s 2019 ceremony.

When receiving the prestigious honour, Naomi proudly said: “This is a very emotional award to receive.”

She continued: “I spend so much of my life in different parts of the world, that people often forget I’m from Brixton, I am a South London girl.”

The fashion star started her career in the early 80s, and would go onto grace the cover of over 500 magazines.

The next decade would see the South London star became one of the modelling worlds Big 5, alongside fellow 90s supermodels Cindy Crawford, 58, Linda Evangelista, 59, Claudia Schiffer, 53 and Christy Turlington, 55.

The glamorous collective would often grace iconic music videos together, most noticeably the late pop icon George Michael’s 1990 music video for his hit single Freedom! ’90, as well as various fashion spreads and high fashion runway shows.

While Naomi still frequently structs across catwalks worldwide, she has turned her focus to being a voice for marginalised communities within the fashion world.

In 2013, Naomi alongside iconic model and wife of late music icon David Bowie, Iman Abdulmajid 68, and fashion model and activist Bethann Hardison, 81, formed Balance Diversity.

Balance Diversity created an open letter to fashion councils in each of big fashion cities, from Milan, Paris, London and New York, encouraging them to address what they considered had been an alleged ‘lack of racial diversity’ within the modelling industry.

The Diversity Coalition proved effective when in 2018, The Fashion Spot’s Diversity Reports estimated that ‘racial diversity in magazines and runways had reached an all-time high’ that year.

Many newer models and fashion influencers have publicly mentioned the mother-of-two as an influence, from gorgeous South Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech, 24 to YouTuber and beauty guru, Jackie Aina, 36.

In May 2021, Naomi shocked social media when she announced the birth of daughter. In June 2023, she announced the birth of her son.

Naomi recently confirmed in a recent interview with The Times that she welcomed both of her children through surrogacy.

She said: “My babies are everything to me. They are 110 percent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.”
