it turned out the mock-up fight poster of himself and Tommy was actually to promote a charity football match.
The singer captained England in last year’s Soccer Aid match in front of 54,000 fans at the London Stadium.
He’s now making a return and will take on Tyson Fury’s brother who just won a fight against YouTube boxer Jake Paul.
But Liam and Tommy were bombarded with abuse online as fans failed to appreciate the joke.

One troll said: “Once again Liam Payne is embarrassing himself.”
Another used One Direction lyrics to poke fun: “Am thinking sadly you’re going in One Direction here. Down. But if anyone’s got a chance. It’s Gotta be You.”
“This is embarrassing,” said another.

Tommy confirmed he will be part of the World XI in the latest celebrity fundraising match, the profits of which help struggling children around the world.
TNT said: “I’m taking off my boxing gloves and lacing up my football boots.”
He added: “The big match is taking place at Old Trafford, Manchester.
“I’ll see you there.”
