Legendary noughties hip-hop star finally returns with solo album SEVENTEEN years after band split

OUTKAST’s Andre 3000 is back after a seventeen-year hiatus but their new music is very different to what fans remember them for.

The hip-hop band was known best for their huge hit Hey Ya! and they released their last album in 2006.

Andre 3000 is dropping his new album “New Blue Sun” on Friday.

However it’s very different to his previous work as it will be an “entirely instrumental album centred around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism,”

The album, from Sony Music’s Epic Records, is co-produced by Andre 3000 and multi-instrumentalist Carlos Nino.

Speaking about releasing an album that’s more in line with his usual genre, he said: “There’s this misconception that I just won’t do it. I think people feel like I’m sitting around on rap albums, or sitting around and I’m just not putting them out in that way. And no it’s not like that.

“In my mind, I really would like to make a rap album,” the 48-year-old artist continues. “So maybe that happens one day, but I got to find a way to say what I want to say in an interesting way that’s appealing to me at this age.”

Outkast were called one of the greatest and most influential hip hop acts of all time after selling 20 million records and winning six Grammy Awards.

Rolling Stone ranked them at No. 7 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time.

Outkast hit the hip hop scene in 1992 and they hit the big time in the early 2000s.

Andre 3000 (Andre Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton) were friends in high school and came up with the idea of Outkast as kids.

They released their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik which gained popularity for the single “Player’s Ball”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart.

They then became more mainstream with their fourth album Stankonia in 2000, which included the singles Ms Jackson and B.O.B.

They released Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in 2003, which was their only album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, which featured Hey Ya! and The Way You Move.

The album won a Grammy for Album of the Year and it was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association.

Outkast also starred in the 2006 musical film Idlewild and recorded the soundtrack.

The duo split in 2007 after they wanted to pursue solo careers.
