Charlotte York and Trey MacDougal didn’t end up together in Sex and the City. Despite that, their ill-fated marriage was still one of the show’s most iconic love stories. The romance was so iconic that the actors and fans still discuss it. Recently, Kyle MacLachlan, who portrayed Trey MacDougal, admitted it was sad to see Charlotte York move on with Harry Goldenblatt.

Kyle MacLachlan has had a pretty illustrious career since Sex and the City, but the role of Trey MacDougal is undoubtedly one of his iconic ones. MacLachlan is still regularly asked about the series. The topic came up during a recent appearance. People caught up with Kyle MacLachlan at the iHeartPodcast Awards at SXSW.
The publication asked the actor how he felt about Kristin Davis suggesting Trey MacDougal was Charlotte York’s perfect match, a statement she made on her podcast, Are You a Charlotte?. MacLachlan agreed with the statement. He went on to say that it was “sad” when they brought in someone else for Charlotte.
MacLachlan was referring to Charlotte hooking up with her divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt. MacLachlan made two post-divorce appearances on the series, but Trey went unmentioned until season 2 of And Just Like That… after an early season 6 appearance. In season 2 of And Just Like That…, Charlotte noted that she wanted to remain friends with Trey but that he passed on the idea. The conversation would have looked different if MacLachlan had agreed to appear.

Last month, Kristin Davis revealed that Kyle MacLachlan turned down the chance to reprise his role on And Just Like That… While Davis admitted she was upset Trey would not appear, she understood his rationale. According to Davis, MacLachlan didn’t want to add sadness to the iconic character or his relationship with Charlotte. Davis later admitted that the storyline proposed for Trey and Charlotte was sad, but she didn’t elaborate further.

News that MacLachlan had turned down a chance to appear shocked many fans. The Twin Peaks actor previously suggested he would be interested in appearing in the reboot. When he didn’t appear on set during season 2 or season 3, everyone just assumed the writing team hadn’t figured out a way to work the character back in.
While it’s unclear if Max will greenlight the series for a fourth season, we remain hopeful that MacLachlan will eventually appear. Season 3 of the iconic reboot has yet to premiere, but is expected soon.
