Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s daughters know ‘daddy is an addict’

Kristen Bell doesn’t believe in keeping secrets from her kids.

The “Frozen” star, 42, said she talks to her daughters, Delta, 8, and Lincoln, 9, about drugs, sex and their father Dax Shepard’s addiction struggles.

“I hate the word ‘taboo.’ I think it should be stricken from the dictionary,” Bell told Real Simple on the cover of its Game Changers issue, released Thursday.

“There should be no topic that’s off the table for people to talk about,” she added.

The “Good Place” actress said she’s aware her parenting style might be “shocking” to some people — but it works for their family.

“I talk to my kids about drugs, and the fact that their daddy is an addict and he’s in recovery, and we talk about sex,” she explained.

“There are all these ‘hard topics’ that don’t have to be if you give the person on the other end your vulnerability and a little bit of credit.”

The “Armchair Expert” co-host, 48, has been sober for almost two decades.

After incurring several motorcycle injuries — which resulted in seven surgeries — Shepard spent years battling between medicating himself for legitimate pain and abusing drugs.

He relapsed in September 2020, breaking his 16 years of sobriety, however, Bell said the ability to apologize was a key skill in their household.

“Making amends and apologizing is an important thing in our family, because humans leave carnage wherever they go,” she explained.

“I really respect when someone does something wrong or hurtful and they apologize. I’m like, ‘Yeah, right on.’ That’s important.”

The “Gossip Girl” alum went on, “If there’s one thing I want to teach my kids, it’s how to make amends — and that it’s for themselves, so they can like who’s in the mirror a little bit more.”

Bell previously revealed she’s open with her kids about doing hallucinogenic mushrooms — but it “backfired” on the actress.

“I overheard my daughter talking to my mom, to [her] grandma, going, ‘I’m actually really glad they share all this stuff with me. Anyway, mom really wanted to try mushrooms,’” the “Veronica Mars” alum told Jimmy Kimmel last year.

Bell joked that she was “more worried” about her “more conservative” mom, Lorelei Bell, finding out about her drug use than her two young children.

She and Shepard started dating in 2007 and tied the knot in 2013.
