The 42-year-old pitcher and the 33-year-old model first made waves as a couple in 2012. They split briefly in 2013. By early 2014, they had gotten back together. In 2016, they announced their engagement at the Met Gala and wed in Italy in November 2017.

MLB stars only get a few days off

The arrival of Verlander and Upton’s second child has fans thrilled. The pitcher seems thrilled, too, and he can share his joy with other players. Several other MLB stars have welcomed new babies in recent days. The Chicago White Sox pitcher, Adrian Houser, was placed on the paternity list this week, too. Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez have also welcomed new babies this month.

Despite the happy news, Verlander and other MLB players like him will be back before fans know it. According to several sources, MLB contracts allow players to miss just three games for the birth of a child. If the player in question needs more time, the team can move them from the paternity list to a separate “restricted” list. The league can elect to place players on the restricted list for various reasons. They are unpaid. Verlander is expected to return promptly.
