JAMIE Theakston’s vocal cord cancer was spotted after radio listeners noticed a change in his voice.
Astute Heart listeners contacted the popular DJ to point out his voice sounded different which led him to seek medical advice.
He had emergency surgery after a lesion was found on his vocal cords, which was later diagnosed as stage 1 laryngeal cancer.
Announcing the news to his fans, the 53-year-old, who co-hosts Heart’s breakfast show with Amanda Holden, confirmed who his replacement will be and when he’ll return on air.
In an Instagram post, Jamie said: “Hi folks, as you know – I recently had an operation to remove a lesion from my vocal cords.

Laryngeal cancer affects the voice box and is normally treated with radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy and targeted cancer medicines.
The prognosis for stage 1 of the condition is good with 90 per cent of those diagnosed expected to live for five years or more.

She then wrote on her profile: “Our wonderful @jamie_theakston has been diagnosed with stage 1 laryngeal cancer.
“His prognosis is very good and he has an incredible team around him.
“Jamie. we love and miss you and look forward to seeing you very soon.”
