Tommy DeVito is expected to start the New York Giants‘ Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys. The re-emergence of “Tommy Cutlets” has reignited interest in the backup quarterback, his unique name, and his potential connection to a famed actor.
Danny DeVito and Tommy DeVito share a last name and a New Jersey connection, but that is apparently where their similarities end. While New York Giants fans were instantly curious about a potential family connection between the quarterback and the actor, apparently, there is not one. At the very least, they aren’t closely related.

Tommy DeVito and Danny DeVito’s shared last name gave instant rise to speculation that they might be related. Still, that’s not the only reason fans assumed they might have a family connection. Both DeVitos are from New Jersey.
Tommy DeVito, the New York Giants’ on-again-off-again quarterback, was born and raised in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Before heading off to play football at Syracuse, he attended a private high school in the area. He returned home to New Jersey following his college career, residing just minutes from MetLife stadium.
Decades earlier, Danny DeVito grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey. While both towns are in New Jersey, they are still far apart. Cedar Grove is located in the northern part of the state; Asbury Park is best known as a shore town, made famous by its music scene.
It has been easy for football fans to assume the young quarterback and the actor are related. After all, they share a last name and are both from New Jersey. Despite the shared last name and geographical closeness, Tommy DeVito and Danny DeVito are not related.
While the two aren’t cousins or otherwise related, Danny DeVito supports the other DeVito’s career. According to several sources, the famed actor is a longtime New York Giants fan. It is unclear if Danny DeVito has ever made it to a game that Tommy DeVito started in.
The younger DeVito started six games during the 2023 season. He has appeared in one game in 2024, following Daniel Jones’ departure from the team. Unless something significant changes, he is expected to start several more games this season. His first 2024 start back could have been better, with the team recording a 7-30 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
