Huge rock supergroup announce ‘hiatus’ at packed gig saying ‘we’re going away – this is our last show’

BOYGENIUS have reportedly announced an intended hiatus during a secret gig in Los Angeles.

The all-female trio – comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus – were performing a secret acoustic set to superfans on Thursday evening when they announced their intention to step away from the limelight.

According to fan sites who have since shared clips and quotes online, the group told the audience they would be “going away for the foreseeable future”.

However, when Dacus declared a rendition of ‘Not Strong Enough’ was their last song, Baker quickly jumped in and added: “Not EVER”.

There is yet to be an official announcement about the band’s hiatus, but all three women have successful solo careers away from the supergroup.

As a result, they may be taking time to focus on their own work before reuniting.

The news comes on the eve of a potentially landmark moment for the band, who are up for a huge number of awards at this weekend’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

Thanks to their debut album, 2023’s The Record, Boygenius is in line to take home a massive seven gongs – Album of the Year, Record of the Year (for ‘Not Strong Enough’), Alternative Album of the Year, Alternative Music Performance, Rock Performance and Rock Song.

The band first got together in 2018, naming themselves Boygenius as an in-joke about boys who are coddled for their skills from a young age.

They released their first, self-titled EP that same year, before going on a hiatus.

After that, they returned with The Record in 2023, their first full-length album, which went to the top of the charts in the UK, Ireland and The Netherlands.

It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

As part of the promotion of The Record, the group released three songs,  ‘$20’, ‘Emily I’m Sorry’, and ‘True Blue’, which were combined into a short film called The Film.

The band recruited Twilight star and indie movie star Kristen Stewart to direct the effort.

Boygenius then hit the road, going on a world tour before releasing their second EP, The Rest, in October.
