Marilyn Monroe’s personal jewelry collection was made up of mostly costume jewelry. But how was the largest real diamond given to her actually worth.
Marilyn Monroe died more than 60 years ago, but she was one of the most iconic and successful actresses of her time with a style that is still influential today. However, many people are unaware that the “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” artist wore mostly costume jewelry throughout her life.
Now, the fine jewelry experts at U.K. retailer Steven Stone are taking a look back at one stunning real diamond Monroe donned during her life and how much it’s worth today.
Maxwell Stone told Showbiz Cheat Sheet:”The most significant piece of jewelry Marilyn Monroe ever wore was the illustrious ‘Moon of Baroda’ — a 24.04-carat, pear-shaped, fancy yellow diamond. Loaned to her in 1953 for the promotional tour of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the stunning necklace added an extra touch of glamour to her already dazzling image.
“According to the Gemological Institute of America, the historic diamond originated in India’s legendary Golconda mines and was originally cut into its antique pear shape to adorn the traditional pagri headdress worn by Indian royalty.”
The expert added: “Given its extraordinary provenance and association with one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars, the Moon of Baroda is considered priceless. However, in 2018, it was sold at Christie’s for approximately $1.5 million — a modest sum for a gem of such historical and cultural significance.”
