Hollywood A-lister unrecognisable in throwback football pic – can YOU tell who it is?

COLIN FARRELL has come a long way from his childhood days in Castleknock – but his old football club are not letting him forget his sporting roots.

The Dubliner, 46, this week earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin.

And to mark that landmark moment in his career, his old football team shared this pic while passing on their congratulations.

A post on the club’s Facebook page said: “Congrats to former player Colin Farrell on his Oscar nomination for The Banshees of Inisherin!

“Colin played for the club from 1988 for four seasons. We wish him the very best of luck for the awards.”

He’ll be vying for the Best Actor gong with Kildare native Paul Mescal, who starred in Aftersun, as well as Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Austin Butler (Elvis) and Bill Nighy (Living).

In total, there was a record 14 Irish nominations across all categories with The Banshees of Inisherin responsible for nine of them.

Colin’s co-stars Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were all similarly recognised in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.

The film’s writer and director Martin McDonagh is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Carter Burwell is also nominated for Best Original Score for the film.

The picture also secured a nod for Best Editing.

In a statement, Farrell reacted to his and his colleagues being so widely recognised by The Academy.

He said: “Just so grateful to the Academy for all the love it’s shared with the Banshees’ cast and crew.

“Also, beyond honoured to be lumped together with my fellow nominees. A heartfelt congratulations to all the lads!”

NOT SHORTT ON TALENT

Meanwhile Pat Shortt, who plays landlord Jonjo Devine in the hit movie, told The Irish Sun: “Colin up against Paul for Best Actor.

“That just shows you how tough it is now for Irish actors and actresses because the talent is that good in this country.

“It’s now Irish actor vs Irish actor at the Oscars… It’s just brilliant!”

He added: “The Banshees of Inisherin is now the most nominated Irish film of all time.

“It has broken every record and this is another day of it doing that … Ireland will have such a strong representation at the Oscar this year.

“It’s incredible when you think we are up against huge countries like France and Germany, the Nordic nations, they all make such fantastic films.

“But they are not getting anything like the shout out Ireland will be getting at the Oscars… I’m also excited about An Cailín Ciúin, it’s a fantastic Irish language movie and I spent some time with Colm Bairéad, the director out in LA.”

An Cailin Ciuin/The Quiet Girl has been nominated for Best International Feature.

Northern Ireland production An Irish Goodbye has also been nominated for best live action short film.
