George Clooney endorses Kamala Harris for president after controversial op-ed urging Biden to step down

George Clooney endorsed Kamala Harris for president after writing a controversial op-ed urging President Biden to step down ahead of the election.

“President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again,” the Oscar winner said in a statement to CNN Tuesday.

“We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest.”

Clooney’s endorsement comes less than two weeks after he penned an op-ed for the New York Times in which he called on his “close friend” Biden, 81, to drop out of the race for re-election and allow a new candidate to take on former President Donald Trump in November.

The “Ocean’s Eleven” actor — who saw Biden in person at a June 15 fundraiser in Los Angeles and watched his botched debate against Trump on June 27 — said the current president was “not the Joe ‘big f–king deal’ Biden of 2010.”

“He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney, 63, wrote on July 10, seemingly referring to Biden’s cognitive decline due to his age.

“We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate,” he added.

Eleven days after Clooney’s opinion piece, Biden announced that he would be dropping out of the presidential race.

“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” the president wrote in a letter posted on X Sunday.

Biden then thanked his vice president, Harris, 59, for “being an extraordinary partner” before endorsing her for POTUS in a second post.

Several stars have thrown their support behind the former prosecutor, including Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Charli XCX, Jamie Lee Curtis and many more.

Beyoncé also supported Harris by allowing her to use her 2016 Kendrick Lamar-featured single, “Freedom,” for her Democratic nominee’s presidential campaign.
