Following his disappearance and the end of his engagement to Amber Portwood, Gary Wayt spent months flying under the radar. The Indiana native is finally ready to speak out and explain exactly what prompted him to disappear from his vacation with Portwood. For nearly a week, Teen Mom: The Next Chapter fans theorized that something bad had happened to Portwood’s then-fiancee. They pointed to the fact that he left his cell phone behind when he fled an Airbnb he was sharing with his then-fiance as proof. Now, Wayt reveals he didn’t leave his phone behind by choice.
Gary Wayt said Amber Portwood refused to give him back his phone
Gary Wayt, Amber Portwood’s ex-fiance, is ready to tell his side of the story. In an interview with TeenMomFanz, an Instagram account dedicated to all Teen Mom drama, Wayt revealed why he left his cell phone behind. The Indiana native told the publication that Portwood took his cell phone, wallet, headphones, and toothbrush during a heated argument.
Wayt said she refused to give him the items back. Wayt said it was then that he made the decision to leave. It is unclear where he stayed that evening, but Wayt was spotted at an area pharmacy before he left the state. It took days for him to procure a new phone and contact the police.
Amber Portwood was truthful about the reason for their disagreement, though
While Portwood failed to mention she refused to hand over Wayt’s phone during their disagreement, she was truthful about other aspects of the discussion that led Wayt to flee the state. During his chat with TeenMomFanz, Wayt confirmed that he and Portwood had discussed his family’s disapproval of her before he disappeared.
Wayt told the publication that he wanted to shelf the conversation for the next day when they had not been drinking, but Portwood refused to end the chat for the evening. When Portwood continued to fight with him, he said he had “no choice” but to become a missing person.
In the aftermath of his disappearance, Portwood said they had an “emotional conversation” about Wayt’s family and how they felt about her before he stepped out of the vacation cabin and did not return. Portwood initially suggested that Wayt may have thought she was breaking up with him, but that doesn’t seem true. While Wayt says they were both drinking, Portwood did not say alcohol was involved in the incident.
Both Portwood and Wayt insisted that he knew nothing about her when they first met. His family, however, reportedly looked into the reality TV star when the relationship got serious and expressed concerns over her arrest record.
