Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have been together for 17 years. The two still keep that ‘spark’ in their marriage in an unexpected way, though.

Actor Gabrielle Union and athlete Dwayne Wade have been together since 2008. The actor and former NBA star dated for about five years before splitting briefly in 2013, but they rekindled the romance and tied the knot back in 2014. The two share four children: three kids from Wade’s previous relationships, and one he and Union welcomed in 2018. Union and Wade have a rock-solid relationship, but after a while, they needed to find new ways to keep the spark.

During a recent interview, Union revealed what it really takes to keep a 17-year relationship from faltering. Plenty of love, of course, but also a little bit of TV time.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade ‘don’t mess around’ with their TV time

Union and Wade have lasted longer than many other celebrity couples, and they appear to genuinely still be so in love. In an interview with Sherri Shepherd, Shepherd asked how Union and Wade manage to keep such a sweet spark in their romance with so many kids and so many years together. Union’s response earned a chuckle from the audience.

“We don’t mess around with our TV time,” Union said. The couple’s show of choice? “My Lottery Dream Home,” Union revealed. The popular HGTV show sees lottery winners buying homes they weren’t able to afford before. Union said that she and Wade look forward to watching the show, which has a new episode every Friday night. Whatever keeps the romance alive, right?

Dwyane Wade recently revealed he battled cancer in 2023

In late January, Wade revealed on his podcast that he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2023. Wade explained to his doctor that he felt like his urine stream was weaker, and he was experiencing stomach aches. However, he only revealed this during a routine checkup. “I didn’t go in for my kidneys,” Wade said. “But because I did the full-body scan, they saw something.” He had surgery on his kidney, and the tumor they discovered was found to be cancerous. Thankfully, Wade is cancer-free today.

Union also opened up to Sherri Shepherd about the diagnosis. “You hear cancer … You think it to the worst-case scenario,” Union said. “I thought he was gonna be ripped out of my life … ripped out of our children’s lives.”

Union went on to explain that it made “year nine” of their loving marriage very difficult. “When they say for better or worse, in sickness and in health … You will be a very prayerful person if you weren’t before,” she said of learning to deal with such difficult news. Union added that it ultimately made their marriage stronger because it forced them to be more “vulnerable” with each other.
