Cynthia Nixon said Sara Ramirez and the team behind ‘And Just Like That…’ all thought Che Diaz’s storyline had concluded.

And Just Like That… season 3 is officially in production, but the Sex and the City reboot will be moving forward without one much-hated character. Che Diaz, played by Sara Ramirez, will not appear in season 3. Fans are happy about Che leaving the show. Still, there has been speculation about why they will no longer be included in the reboot. Cynthia Nixon, the actor who plays Miranda Hobbes, recently set the record straight.

Rumors flew after Sara Ramirez stepped away from the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot

After it was announced that Ramirez would not return for And Just Like That… season 3, fans took to social media to share their theories on why their character was cut. Some fans believed Ramirez’s political beliefs led to their firing, as the announcement seemed to coincide with Ramirez speaking out on current events. Other fans theorized that Michael Patrick King finally folded to public sentiment about the character and did away with Che to save the series.

Ramirez didn’t speak about their character’s dismissal, leading to further speculation. While the rumors persist, Cynthia Nixon insists there was nothing sinister behind the decision. In fact, she suggests Ramirez was on board with their character being written out of the show.

Cynthia Nixon explains why Che Diaz was written out of ‘And Just Like That…’

While there have been many rumors about why Ramirez was fired, Cynthia Nixon offered her thoughts on why Che was written out of the show. In a recent interview with Vogue, Nixon opened up about the reboot and its development. She spoke on Che Diaz, too. Nixon reportedly speaks to Ramirez regularly and said everyone agreed to write Che off the show. She said Ramirez created an amazing character who shook things up, but everyone thought their arc was complete. According to Nixon, Che brought what they needed to the series, and there really was no more room to develop them further.

Nixon’s explanation actually makes a great deal of sense. Che was first introduced as Carrie’s co-worker and later became Miranda’s love interest. The podcast Che and Carrie worked on was canceled, and their relationship with Miranda ended. There was no reason for them to remain in the social circle after the break-up. Che moved on just like many of the show’s other love interests. Once the ladies of Sex and the City broke up with someone, they generally stayed away for good, with a few exceptions. Trey MacDougal was never seen again, and neither was Jack Berger. There is no reason why Che should remain in the social circle, either.

Fans can expect to see more dating in season 3

While we expect Charlotte York to remain married to Harry Goldenblatt in season 3 of And Just Like That…, the other character’s storylines are far more open. Carrie Bradshaw will still be dealing with the back-and-forth drama of her relationship with Aidan Shaw, but Miranda will finally be completely untethered.

In her chat with Vogue, Nixon said she thinks the show has always worked better when someone is actively dating around. Nixon hinted that fans can expect to see more dating and likely dating disasters from Miranda. Nixon said the character will explore a more expansive romantic landscape.

Season 3 of And Just Like That… is filming in New York City. Max has yet to give the season an official premiere date, but fans can expect the series to be released in 2025.
