Cardi B and Offset had a whirlwind romance, marrying just months after they went on their first public date. Before attending the Super Bowl together, Cardi warned Offset not to make her look like a fool. She explained the ways in which she felt he could embarrass her. Though he promised not to, they are now going through a divorce, at least in part because of his infidelity.
Cardi B issued Offset a warning on their first date
Cardi and Offset collaborated on her song “Lick” in 2017. Not long after its release, they went out on their first public date. “Public” is the key word, as they had millions of eyes on them while attending the Super Bowl. Before agreeing to go with him, though, Cardi had her publicist issue him a warning on her behalf.
“Around Super Bowl time I told my publicist to tell him, because I was very shy, ‘Listen, if we gonna go on a public date together, you cannot make me look like a dumb-a** after this,’” she told GQ. “I never wanted to date a rapper because I would hate to look crazy in public.”
She elaborated on the type of behavior that would embarrass her.
“Like you on a date with me but you f***ing other b****es,” she said. “And he was like, ‘No, I really like her. I’m really feeling her.’”
The date went well, and their relationship quickly turned serious, at least partly because people now knew about it.
“We was talking, we was making out. We didn’t f***,” she said. “After the Super Bowl, it got really serious because I feel, like, all eyes on us.”
She admitted she had some concerns before she married him
The pair wed in a secret ceremony in September; Cardi admitted she pitched marriage in the middle of an argument. Until the moment they decided to marry, she said there wasn’t much trust in their relationship.
“For a long time, we was in love with each other but we didn’t really trust in each other,” she said. “It was like a competition of who’s gonna hit each other up first. I don’t want to hit him up first; he will hit me up first.”
She said that others warned them about the relationship, adding to both their doubts.
“People used to put things in my head: ‘He gonna leave you. He be f***ing with mad b****es.’ People used to put things in his head: ‘Cardi, she’s a dog. Don’t trust her,’” she said. “We never really trusted each other because I always feel like he could get any girl he wants — what makes me think he’s gonna want me?”
When they decided to marry, though, she said they tried to put aside any concerns.
“It was just too much playing games,” she said. “He would look for me; sometimes he would take a jet to me. And it was just like, ‘Let’s stop playing. We really love each other. I’m scared to lose you, and you scared to lose me.’”
Not long after their secret wedding ceremony, Offset publicly proposed during a concert.
Cardi B spoke about staying with Offset after she learned he cheated
Despite Cardi’s warnings early in the relationship, she said Offset still cheated on her. They briefly split at the end of 2018, but decided to stay together.
“When me and my husband got into our issues — you know, he cheated and everything — and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me,” she told Vogue. “But it’s real-life s***. If you love somebody and you stop being with them, and you’re depressed and social media is telling you not to talk to that person because he cheated, you’re not really happy on the inside until you have the conversation.”
She filed for divorce in 2020, but retracted later that year. In 2024, she filed for divorce again. She has now moved on to a new relationship with NFL player Stefon Diggs.
