Per The Mirror, there are plenty of royal nicknames to go around within the House of Windsor. Some are funny, some sweet, and some are strange.

The late Princess Diana is known as “Granny Diana” by Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Prince Harry’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, also use the same nickname for their late grandmother.

Prince William first revealed the sweet nickname in the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. He joked she would have been a “nightmare grandmother” as she wouldn’t have left his children alone.

King Charles is known as Grandpa Wales. Reportedly, the late Queen Elizabeth used the same nickname for her grandfather, George V, whom she called Grandad England.

What did the younger generation of royals call Queen Elizabeth?

Compared to their grandparents, Queen Elizabeth was also given a cute nickname by the Wales children. Per The Mirror, the late monarch’s moniker was quite endearing.

When Prince George was younger, he called the monarch “Gan-Gan.” He was only two when he bestowed that particular nickname on the queen.

The publication quoted Kate Middleton as saying, upon the birth of Princess Charlotte, “It’s very special having a new little girl. I feel very, very lucky that George has got a little sister.

She continued, “The Queen was thrilled that it was a little girl, and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington, she was one of our first visitors here. George is only two-and-a-half, and he calls her ‘Gan-Gan.’ She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay, and that just shows her love for her family.”

Also, the Queen’s immediate family called her Lilibet. Prince William would refer to Elizabeth as “Gary” because he couldn’t say Grandma.

Camilla Parker Bowles became Queen Consort in May of 2023. Queen Elizabeth reigned over the United Kingdom for 70 years. She died on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96.
