Broadway buzzing that Keanu Reeves could star in ‘Waiting for Godot’

Is he the one?

There’s big buzz on Broadway that Keanu Reeves will make his theater debut in Samuel Beckett’s famed play, “Waiting for Godot.”

Multiple theater insiders said they’ve heard that the “John Wick” star will appear in the play — though there was no word on who is producing or directing the piece.

A rep for Reeves did not immediately get back to us.

Reeves — the “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” icon who appeared in the 1993 Shakespeare movie “Much Ado About Nothing,” with Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton and Kate Beckinsale — has previously offered his services to star in a musical, but lamented he can’t sing.

“I would love to be in a musical,” Reeves reportedly said. “But I can’t sing so I’m not sure anybody else would want me in a musical… but I sure would try. I mean I could sing, but not really well. I can always dream.”

“Godot,” of course, sure ain’t “Oklahoma.”

It was once voted the “most significant English-language play of the 20th century,” and has starred such a wide-ranging array of thespians as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, John Turturro, Ethan Hawke, John Leguizamo, Steve Martin and Robin Williams.

But one major theater vet huffed that the idea of “The Matrix” star making his theater debut in the show comes from a particular Broadway producer’s play book.

“They talk a star who needs fancy upscale cred into doing a play nobody wants to see ever again for the next 100 years,” said the source. “This was the Robin Williams-Steve Martin play on ‘Godot,’ a production that was mostly despised, as was the one with Patrick Stewart. It’s the go-to play for movie stars who feel guilty about having made too much money.”

Reeves, 58, is coming off the fourth “John Wick” blockbuster that has hit nearly $250 million since its release Mar. 24.

As a theater fan, he was seen last year in the audience of “American Buffalo” to see “Matrix” costar Laurence Fishburne.
